Here is a simple visitor counter that I wrote in Perl. It uses per site file locking with automatic recovery if an errant lock ever gets left around. I could have used a database, but that would of been overkill for something so simple.

You can use the counter on your vox blog if you'd like. First, copy this text:

<iframe src="http://voxr.net/sitecount/?site=YOUR_BLOG_DOMAIN" style="width:150px; height:150px; overflow: hidden;" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Then, go to the design section on Vox. Click customize your sidebars, check the embed box, and click configure next to it. Paste that text and then change 'YOUR_BLOG_DOMAIN' to your blog domain name, for instance: xantus.vox.com or just xantus. Click both OK buttons and then check your blog!

You should also pick the small embed type instead of the default.

Now you can set your own color!

You can use this color picker tool to pick your foreground (fg) color and background (bg) color and get a new url for your counter.

You have to turn on your vox beta features in your account page first. Then embed will show up.

I don't know if anyone else cares or not...but...I changed the date on the post that I placed this in. I made it a year from now, so that it will always be at the top of my blog. I don't know if I will keep it there, I might get sick of it, but just an idea. :) Thanks again Xantus!

you forgot to add the code... you copied the urlcode from the colourpicker but you still have to paste it in the other code; paste it over the text in bold and it will work (Xantus, I hope you don't mind this post... ) ->

Thank you, Xantus. I installed your counter into my site. One thing I noticed is the counter (or perhaps any other code) didn't show to the public even if my entry was set to be viewable by the public. I set postings viewable by only family by default. So when I changed the default, the counter appeared to the public. I guess in the future users can control "viewable" setting for each code in "Organize" window.

Wow-GREAT tool!

I added it to my top post (that stays on top all the time). I was expecting that it would start at 1 but wass surprised when it said that over 4000 had viewd the blog since March 25th (or suchlike). Is that right - does calculate from that date or is that a mistake. Have we really had over 4000 from that date.

If it's a mistake - how to do I correct it. Hope it's not a mistake - that not a bad response!

The domain you're trying to use is:
"HOBO - COVENTRY MUSIC MAGAZINE ON VOX"

Which isn't a domain. You should be using:
"coventrymusichistory.vox.com"

I must be lame, I can't get it to work. I think they've changed the wording a bit since you posted this. I'm computer-challenged enough that I need exact directions! Help please, I'd love a counter, it's one thing that Vox is really lacking

I have to ask you something though - my counter has a line of text at the top of it that says "go back and read the directions". . . is there any way to get rid of the text? (or did I do something wrong.) Also --- it says I've had ALOT of hits on my blog --- way more than I think may be right...If you have a minute, could you go to my blog page and see if I did it right or if I screwed up some how???

That message means you didn't use a correct domain name.

Try this:

You could try creating a page somewhere with multiple widgets on it and then include that using and iframe.

I keep getting the go back for instructions. Also the count is from March of 2007 and I didn't open the blog until March of 2008. I think I got the domain name right.

Re-copy and paste the code, and replace the domain carefully.
